Seated Nude In An Armchair, Taking Off Her Stockings

Aimé-Jules Dalou

(French, 1838-1902)

Signed Dalou
Stamped Makers H.J. Hatfiled & Son London
Numbered 4/6
Bronze with a rich dark patination
Height: 7 1/2 inches (18.5cm)

Conceived circa 1890 and cast circa 1965

The present model is typical of the work produced by Aimé Jules Dalou during his stay in London during the 1870s. Having fled Paris after the fall of the Commune at the hands of the Royalists in 1871, Dalou received a warm reception at both the Royal Academy’s annual exhibition and from private buyers. Following a fruitful period of teaching at the South Kensington School of Art Dalou even received the patronage of Queen Victoria when he was commissioned to create a private memorial at the Royal Windsor Chapel.

During this period Dalou also modeled a number of maternal subjects as well as female bathers or ‘Baigneuses’ to satisfy the tastes of his burgeoning client base. Models such as Femme nue lisant dans un fauteuil (Collection of the Musee d’Orsay) and Maternal Joy (Baltimore Museum of Art), not only delighted bourgeoisie English collectors, but the loose impressionistic modeling and choice of subject can clearly seen as a precursor to Edgar Degas’ Woman Seated in an Armchair Wiping Her Left Armpit and Woman Seated in an Armchair Wiping Her Neck.

The present work was originally modeled during the later part of Dalou’s stay in England and a larger terracotta version (height 33cm), once in the collection of the Musée du Luxembourg, is now in the collection of the Petit Palais, Paris. The British foundry H.J. Hatfiled & Son London cast six smaller bronzes, of which the present model is an example, in 1965. The unsigned plaster, from which these bronzes were cast was bought by the famous ballet dancer Nadia Nerina in 1964 from an exhibition of Dalou’s work at Mallets, London. The second bronze cast (2/6) is now in the collection of the Tate, London.
