Pablo Picasso was one of the most talented artists of the 20th century. His experimentation spread across multiple mediums, with his work shaping and propelling modern art forward over seven decades. Living and working in his adopted country of France from his twenties onwards, Picasso challenged conceptions of form, colour and theory that reverberate to this day. The profound depth of his work has led to the periodization of his career, with individual periods covering styles from cubism to symbolism to neo-classicism.

Picasso had enjoyed critical acclaim from the 1910s onwards yet in 1930s his work was elevated in appreciation and significance with his painting Guernica of 1937. The work, for its political as well as artistic merits, propelled Picasso to becoming a household name and in the remaining decades of his career he was celebrated as the world’s leading artist. His work is prominently displayed in the leading museums of the world

While his paintings have garnered the most notoriety and fame, Picasso spent his career expressing his genius through other mediums as well. His experimentation and exposure to lithograph portraiture was based on his relationship with Jacqueline Roque, his young lover and eventual wife. Roque proved to be a major muse for Picasso, who painted numerous portraits of her throughout their relationship.

In 1958 he moved with Jacqueline to the south of France where they met Hidalgo Arnera, who introduced him to the linocut technique. The relationship between Arnera and Picasso evolved into a collaboration wherein Picasso designed the linocuts and sent it to Arnera to be produced. As with many mediums, Picasso adopted this newly discovered technique and made it his own.

The present linocut Diurnes depicts a female nude, dressed in her pyjamas, as she sits on a beach. As with various works by Picasso, the open discussion of sexuality and the female form, as well as the communication between the lines and shapes that form together a coherent and mesmerizing image, are presented in the quintessential style that has made Picasso famous and recognizable. Certainly, the circumstances of living with his lover in the south of France could have been the major influence in the design of this particular linocut. Indeed, the vivid and unique life of Picasso served not only as inspiration but was the background to many of his works, a window to his personal and artistic expression.
